The Great Aim of Education is not Knowledge but Action - Herbert Spencer

Visited Middle & High School Math Classes, At Child's Way Charter School. 1/16/2013 Question 5

840 stickers were given to 42 children. 2/3 of the children were boys, and each of them received the same number of stickers. Each girl received twice as many stickers as each boy. How many stickers did each girl receive?

Solution: 42 children, 2/3 boys, that means: 2/3(42) = 28 boys & 14 girls

Let S = the # of stickers received by boys

Let 2S = the # of stickers receive by girls

840 = 28S + 14(2S)

840 = 28S + 28S

840 = 56S

840/56 = 56S/56

      S = 15

     2S =30

Each girl received 30 stickers.

Another Solution: 28X + 14(2X) = 840

                            28X + 28X = 840

                                 56X = 840

                                     X = 15

                                   2X = 30

Answer: Each girl received 30 stickers.
