The Great Aim of Education is not Knowledge but Action - Herbert Spencer

Mrs. Suarez bought 3 pairs of jeans and 5 shirts for $441.00. If each pair of jeans cost 2/3 as much as each shirt,

a) What was the price of each pair of jeans?

b) What was the price of each shirt?

Solution: Let S be the price of shirts, and J be the price of the jeans.

You are told: 3J + 5S = $441.00

J = (2/3)S

Plug in J into the first equations:

3(2/3)S + 5S = $441.00

(3/1)(2/3)S + 5S = $441.00

6S + 5S = $441.00

11S = $441.00

11S/11 = $441.00 / 11

S = $63

Plug in S: 3J + 5(63) = $441.00

3J + 315 = $441.00

-315 = -315

3J = $126

3J/3 = $126/3

J = $42

a) Price of each pair of jeans is $42.00 dollars.

b) Price od each shirt is $63.00 dollars.
